Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

Playing Favourites

Margaret L. and David L.,  two MIA visitors, with “Walruses and seal” (c. 1950) by an unidentified artist, Baffin Island, stone, whalebone, ivory, MIA Collection.

Where are you from?

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

We are deeply interested in Inuit Art and David is an artist himself.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

Seals are an important part of the folklore of Shetland, where I was brought up. Selkies are seals possessing souls of lost sailors.
