Playing Favourites: Shankers Family., August 27, 2012

27 Aug

Shankers family with “Doll” (c. 2010) by Martina Anoee (1933-2010), Arviat, sealskin, foxfur, wool, thread, hair, MIA Collection.

Where are you from?

Scarborough, ON.

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

Yes, it’s our first visit. We got a map pass and our daughter is studying Aboriginal culture at school in grade 3.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

We like how they use animal skin and beading to make it decorative. The flowers look real and the skins had to be cut and sewn to make the clothing – that looks difficult to do.
