Playing Favourites: Margaret N., December 13th, 2011

20 Dec

Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA Visitor Margaret N. with "Seated Hunter" (1950's) from Unidentified Artist (Nunavik), stone, ivory, Sprott/MIA Collection

Where are you from?

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

Yes it’s my first visit. I am a geography and geology teacher for high school pupils for 38 years and I have a 3 year Anthropology degree.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

The stone is very hard and yet there is a great degree of fluidity even with economy in carving detail. There is still enough detail in boots, teeth, clothing and a vitality in the men’s expression and a pride in stating his Inuit identity. This is still accomplished despite the difference in two mediums, ivory and stone.
