Playing Favourites: Niall S., November 29, 2011

29 Nov

Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA visitor Niall S. with "Dancing Bear" (1978) by Pauta Saila, RCA (1916-2009), Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Stone, Private Collection

Where are you from?

I’m from Ireland originally. I now live in Toronto.

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

Yes, my first time. I came to volunteer my time and get involved.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

I like the combination of the two figures together- ambiguous. You can’t tell if they are angry (about to attack or fight) or if they are happy and about to dance together. Also, I like the eyes on the right figure. My sister loves bears, so it reminds me of her.
