Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA visitor Kim C. with "Shaman's Wish to Fly" (2010) by Mattiusi Iyaituk (1950-), Akulivik, Nunavik, Stone, whalebone, Sprott/MIA Collection

Where are you from?

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

I’m a volunteer at MIA in Toronto.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

I appreciate how the artist conveys a highly abstract concept such as transformation in a concrete material like stone and whale vertebrae, which interestingly houses the spinal cord involving the central nervous system, which is sort of a doorway to abstract thought perception involved in overcoming the physical world represented by the stone base.
