Playing Favourites: Catherine S., September 4, 2011

15 Sep

Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA visitor Catherine S. next to “Caribou” (c. 1950s) by an unidentified artist from Puvirnituq, Stone, Caribou Antler, MIA Collection

Where are you from?

New York City, NY

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

Interest in Inuit Art, trying to educate myself more on it after a few impulse purchases of sculptures. (I know I like it, now I’m trying to figure out exactly why…)

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

I love the whimsical nature combined with the realistic representation of the animal.  Caputres a caribou while eating/relaxed.  Technical aspects of antler carving also impressive.
