Playing Favourites is a running series featuring MIA visitors, staff and volunteers with their favorite objects in our collection.  Playing Favourites is open to every person at MIA, so please let us know if you’d like to participate the next time you visit.

MIA visitor Peter E. with “Returning Home” (2003) by Roger Aksadjuak (1972 – ), Kangiqliniq (Rankin Inlet), Ceramic, MIA Collection

Where are you from?

Vienna, Austria

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

Years ago I saw a documentary.  Visiting a friend.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

The colour of the ceramic.  Especially like the ‘Dog’/Bear animal carrying the hunter home.  Animal looks strong, regal like a king – like this connection of animal/nature to man.  Also, the seal is small – gives idea of the man’s respect of nature – only taking what he needs (sustainability).  The whole piece gives idea of cycle of life.
