MIA visitor Sila O. with “Creation Story” (2007) by Manasie Akpaliapik (1935 – ), Ikpiarjuk (Arcrtic Bay), Whalebone, stone, ivory, Private Collection on Loan to MIA

Where are you from?

Turkey (Ankara)

What brings you to MIA? Is this your first visit?

This is my second visit. I am very interested in Inuit culture and enjoyed my first visit a lot. This time I brought my parents and sister.

Why is this your favourite piece in the collection?

This sculpture is moving because of its symmetric symphony of faces and claws appearing on all corners. The title “Creation Story” leaves open what story is expressed: there is the portrayal of a birth in the middle of claws and a seeming wilderness. A story in three dimensions.
